Corn is widely used in the production of American pilsner. In some of these lager beers, corn can make up to 50% of the malt blend. When brewing a light beer, corn can be used to achieve an even paler color compared to using only barley in the malt blend. Flaked corn provides a fairly neutral flavor in ales and a subtle hint of corn in lighter beers.  

Flaked corn is rolled and heat-treated, allowing it to be used directly in the mash.
